Given Without ReturnMatthew 6:4

Everybody Knows Except The One I Give To

This message is for the man whose quiet giving has become known to everybody around him except the person receiving it, and who is uneasy at how good the being known feels

You have never told him. That part is intact.

Six years and he has no idea, and you have been careful about it, and there is nothing in how you behave toward him that would give it away.

But other people know.

Your wife, obviously, from the beginning. And then a brother, because it came up. And then somebody at church, because your wife mentioned it warmly to one person in a way that was entirely well meant.

And it has gone slightly further than that now and you are not sure how far.

And here is the thing you have been circling for a few months. It is not the leak that bothers you.

It is that when somebody looks at you slightly differently because of it, something in you likes it. And the liking it is what you have been unable to put down.

There is a verse about alms and secrecy, and it is more specific about where the seeing happens than most people remember.

That thine alms may be in secret

Here it is.

That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. (Matthew 6:4, King James Version)

Let me say something plainly about that second half before we go on, because this site does not trade in it.

The reward there is God's and it is His business and His timing, and it is not a promise that quiet giving produces anything for you from anybody. Nobody here is telling you to keep it secret so that something comes back.

You are not being offered a mechanism, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that distinction clean. Matthew 6:4 puts the reward with the Father rather than anywhere you could go and collect it, and without it the whole verse turns into a strategy.

Now the part that actually matters here, which is the first half.

That thine alms may be in secret. Not: keep quiet about it. In secret is a location rather than a behavior. It is describing where the thing happens rather than what a man says about it.

You have been thinking about a rule when the verse describes a place, and it is written that the alms are in secret rather than that they are not spoken of. The Spirit of God is the one who chose a location word, and the location is what has quietly changed in six years.

And the clause that follows tells you who is in that place.

Thy Father which seeth in secret. There is one witness named and it is not a person. The whole arrangement is built for an audience of one.

You have been in a room with one witness in it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who set that up. The written word names the Father as the one who sees rather than listing anybody else, and He set it up so that a man never has to manage an audience.

And here is what has happened without you doing anything wrong.

The audience has grown. Not because you told anybody. But there are now five or six people in a room built for one, and that changes what the room is, regardless of how any of them got in.

You are standing in a different room from the one you started in, and it is written that the alms are in secret rather than that the giver stays quiet while others talk. The Spirit of God is the one who tells a man what has actually changed, and something has.

Why the liking it is not the disaster

Now let me deal with the part that has been troubling you, because it deserves an honest answer rather than a reassurance.

When somebody looks at you differently, you like it.

That is not a sign that six years were secretly about this. If it had been about this, you would have told him, or you would have told more people, or you would have let something slip in front of him at some point in six years, and you have not.

You have six years of evidence pointing the other way, and it is written that the alms are in secret, which is precisely what you have kept toward him. The Spirit of God is the one who weighs six years against a feeling, and six years is the heavier thing.

And here is what the liking it actually is.

A man who does a thing for six years with nobody in the room eventually gets tired, in a place that does not have words in it. And when somebody looks at him differently, that tiredness gets touched, and it feels good in exactly the way food feels good.

That is not vanity. That is hunger.

You have a hunger rather than a fault, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can tell those apart. His word puts one witness in the room rather than promising that a man never wants a second one, and He has never once confused them in you.

And here is the danger to name, since it is worth naming once.

The liking it is not the problem. The problem would be the day it starts steering something. A slightly larger amount because of who is watching, a slightly different timing, a slight reluctance to correct somebody who has the story wrong.

You are nowhere near that and it is worth knowing where it is, and it is written that the seeing belongs to the Father rather than to anybody who found out. The Spirit of God is the one who shows a man a line while he is still a long way from it.

Put it back between two people

So here is what to do, and it is not a confession and it is not a dramatic reversal.

Go to the two people most likely to mention it and ask them, warmly, not to.

Not as a rebuke. Nobody did anything wrong and your wife certainly did not. Say that you would rather it stayed quiet, and that you are not upset with anybody, and leave it there.

You are able to close it without blaming anybody, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that conversation short and warm. Matthew 6:4 names a location rather than assigning fault to whoever is standing in it, and short and warm is the only way it works.

And say nothing about why.

Do not explain any unease about it. Do not say anything about liking it, which would turn a small request into a confession and would put the other person in the position of having to reassure you.

I would rather it stayed quiet. That is the whole sentence.

You have one sentence and it needs no reasons attached, and it is written that the alms are in secret rather than that the reasons are explained. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a request from turning into a disclosure, and the disclosure would cost more than the leak has.

And then keep giving, exactly as before.

Nothing about this changes what goes to him or when or how much. The six years were right and they stay right, and the only thing being adjusted is who else is in the room.

You are able to fix the room without touching the giving, and Scripture locates the alms rather than reducing them. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a good habit intact while a man corrects something around it.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man in a room that got bigger.

You have a secret that stopped being one, and a gift has never once been a bill quietly issued. Matthew 6:4 says that thine alms may be in secret, and thy Father which seeth in secret, and the Holy Spirit is the one who named one witness rather than none.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You were never doing it for a room, and no six years of keeping something from the one person it concerns has ever been the behavior of a man who wanted an audience. It is written that the alms are in secret, and the Spirit of God is turning a leak nobody meant into two short warm conversations.

Close the room. Keep giving.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Room that got bigger on its own, you are not what six years of this has been about. Matthew 6:4 says that thine alms may be in secret, so by the Holy Spirit I ask two people warmly to keep it quiet this week, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Feeling when somebody looks at me, you have never once been vanity. The written word puts one witness in the room rather than promising a man never wants a second, and by the Holy Spirit I name the hunger and I do not let it steer anything.
  3. Father, You built the whole arrangement for an audience of one and You have been in it since the start. Your word says thy Father which seeth in secret, so by Your Spirit I put it back between two people, and I keep giving exactly as before.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
