You could tell me the date.
Not roughly. The actual afternoon, what the room looked like, what she said, and the exact quality of the pause before she said it.
It was not cruel. She has never once been cruel to you. It was two seconds of a face and then a sentence that was slightly too careful, and you understood entirely, and nothing else was said by anybody.
And you never gave her anything again.
Not as a decision. There was no moment where you resolved anything. The next year came round and you did not, and the year after that it had become the shape of things, and here you are at eleven.
She has never mentioned it. You have never mentioned it. And somewhere in the middle of that decade the two of you got noticeably further apart, and neither of you could name a reason.
There is a proverb about falling that is a great deal more generous with numbers than you have been.
A just man falleth seven times
Here it is.
For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief. (Proverbs 24:16, King James Version)
A just man falls seven times. Read that again, because most people hurry past it.
Not a careless man. Not a foolish one. A just man, and the proverb attaches seven falls to him as a matter of course, in a sentence that is not criticizing him at all.
You have been treating one fall as remarkable, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put that number there. Proverbs 24:16 attaches seven of them to a just man without one word of complaint, and He put it there so nobody would be surprised by their own.
Now the verb that carries the whole proverb.
And riseth up again. That is the distinguishing feature. Not the number of falls, which is high and expected. The rising.
The contrast in the second half is not between falling and not falling. It is between a man who gets up and one who stays down.
You have been down rather than fallen, and it is written that the just man riseth up again rather than that he avoids the ground. The Spirit of God is the one who set the difference there, and it is a difference about getting up rather than about not stumbling.
And notice what the proverb does not do.
It does not say the falls were small. It does not minimize them or explain them away or suggest they did not matter. It lets seven falls stand as real events and puts the whole weight on what happens afterward.
You are not being told it did not hurt, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a real thing stay real. His word counts the falls honestly rather than discounting them, and He can do that because the rising is not conditional on the fall being small.
What eleven years bought
Now let me put the arithmetic on the table, because it has been running quietly the whole time.
The afternoon lasted about ten seconds. The not giving has lasted eleven years.
That exchange was never agreed to by anybody. Nobody offered you that trade and you did not accept it consciously, and yet it has been running, and it has cost what a decade costs.
You have been paying eleven years for ten seconds, and it is written that the falling is counted in sevens rather than in decades. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a person see a running cost that has been invisible because it was never itemized.
And here is what it actually bought, which is the part worth being honest about.
It bought protection from ever seeing that face again. That is genuine. It has worked, and there has been no repeat, and the two seconds have never recurred.
It also bought a distance neither of you understands, and eleven years of a small yearly absence that she has certainly noticed and has almost certainly explained to herself in some way that is not accurate.
You have been buying safety at a price nobody quoted you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a woman the whole invoice. Scripture measures a person by whether they rise rather than by whether they are ever exposed again, and He shows it without accusing anybody of anything.
And one thing about her, said plainly.
She has spent eleven years being the person who is not given anything by you. Whatever she thinks the reason is, it is not the true one, because the true one has never been said out loud.
You are the only one holding the actual reason, and it is written that the just man riseth up again rather than that he waits to be understood. The Spirit of God is the one who knows what she has been telling herself, and getting up is what ends it rather than any explanation.
Rise this year
So here is what to do, and it is deliberately small because eleven years cannot be answered with something large.
Take her something. Ordinary, plain, and about the size of what you would take anybody.
Do not make it significant. Do not choose something that carries eleven years in it, because she would feel the weight and would have to respond to it.
You are able to rise with something completely ordinary, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ordinary act carry a decade quietly. Proverbs 24:16 puts the whole distinction in the getting up rather than in how impressively it is done, and quietly is the only way it can carry one.
And hand it over on the step if you can.
At a door, on a step, with a coat still on. Not sat down in a room where a conversation has space to develop. The step is short by design and there is nowhere in it for either of you to have to say anything.
You have a doorway available that keeps this small, and it is written that the just man riseth up again rather than that he explains the fall. The Spirit of God is the one who arranges a short doorway, and short is what makes it possible.
And say nothing at all about the eleven years.
No I know it has been a while. No small laugh about the gap. No apology, no reference, no acknowledgment of any kind. Say her name and hand it over and talk about the weather.
You are able to close eleven years without mentioning them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes silence about a decade a kindness rather than an evasion. The written word records the rising rather than any speech about the falling, and here it is entirely a kindness.
And then do it again next year. That is the part that finishes it.
One year is a nice afternoon. Two years is a change. Whatever she has been telling herself for eleven years comes apart in the second year and not the first.
You have two years of work rather than one afternoon, and it is written that the rising happens again and again rather than once. The Spirit of God is the one who holds a person to a second year, and the second year is where the thing actually turns.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has been down for eleven years.
You have been down for eleven years after one fall, and one wrong afternoon has never once been a verdict on you. Proverbs 24:16 says a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again, and the Holy Spirit is the one who counted the falls generously and put the whole weight on the rising.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You are a just woman who fell once, and no ten seconds anywhere have ever been worth eleven years of a person's life. It is written that the rising is what distinguishes, and the Spirit of God is turning a decade of quiet absence into a plain thing handed over on a step.
Rise this year. That is the whole of it.
Declare this over yourself
- Afternoon eleven years ago that I can still date, you are not costing me another decade. Proverbs 24:16 says a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again, so by the Holy Spirit I take her something plain this week and hand it over on the step, in the name of Jesus.
- Decade I never once decided on, you have never been a trade that anybody offered me. The written word counts the falls generously and puts the whole weight on the rising, and by the Holy Spirit I get up and I say nothing about the years.
- Father, You attached seven falls to a just man without one word of complaint about him. Your word says he riseth up again, so by Your Spirit I stop paying eleven years for ten seconds, and I go and stand at her door.
