The Gift MissedPsalm 103:14

I Have Replayed One Face For Four Years

This message is for the man who has run the same four year old expression through his head so many times that the memory has become more certain than the moment ever was

Four years, and you could draw it.

That is not an exaggeration and you know it is not. You could describe the exact angle of her head, what happened around the eyes, the precise length of the pause before she said anything.

You have that level of detail about a moment that lasted less than two seconds and happened once, four years ago, in a room full of people who were mostly looking at something else.

And it comes back at odd times. In the truck. Standing at a sink. At three in the morning about once a month.

And every time it comes back it is slightly worse than it was the time before, and slightly sharper, and slightly more certain.

I want to say something about that certainty, because it is the part that has been doing the damage, and there is a verse about how a man is actually built.

He knoweth our frame

Here it is.

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. (Psalm 103:13-14, King James Version)

He knoweth our frame. Frame means construction. What a thing is made of and how it behaves.

That is a statement about God having accurate expectations. He is not surprised by how people work. He knows the design, including the parts of the design that produce four years of a two second memory.

You have been treating a feature of the frame as a failure of character, and the Holy Spirit is the one who wrote that as knowledge rather than as disappointment. Psalm 103:14 says He knoweth our frame rather than that He expects better from it, and the difference is everything here.

Now the second half, which is even more direct.

He remembereth that we are dust. Not that we are weak. Dust. The plainest possible statement about what a person is made of and how much strain the construction takes.

That is God, in the middle of a psalm about mercy, saying out loud that He has not forgotten what He is dealing with.

You are being handled by somebody who has never once overestimated you, and it is written that He remembereth that we are dust rather than that He waits for us to be more than that. The Spirit of God is the one who put that sentence in a psalm about pity, and it is there as comfort rather than as a verdict.

And here is why that matters for a man with a face in his head.

A mind that repeats a painful two seconds for four years is not a broken mind and it is not a weak one. It is dust doing exactly what dust does. The rumination is a mechanism and it runs in nearly everybody and it has never been evidence of anything about you.

You have not been failing to get over something, and Scripture names the material rather than blaming it. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a charge off a man who has been prosecuting himself for four years.

What the replaying did to it

Now the part that will help most, and it is a plain fact about memory.

Every time a memory is recalled, it is rebuilt. It does not sit in storage like a photograph. It gets reconstructed, and the reconstruction includes whatever the person felt while reconstructing it.

Which means that what you can now see in such extraordinary detail is not the face. It is the four hundredth reconstruction of a face, and every one of those was made by a man who had already decided what it meant.

You have been sharpening something rather than remembering it, and it is written that He knoweth our frame, which includes knowing exactly how it stores things. The Spirit of God is the one who understands the machinery, and He is not fooled by what four years of it produced.

And here is the specific consequence.

The certainty you feel is not evidence. It is repetition. A thing recalled four hundred times feels four hundred times more certain than a thing recalled once, and the feeling has no connection whatsoever to whether it was accurate the first time.

You have been treating a feeling of certainty as a fact, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates confidence from truth. The written word says He remembereth that we are dust rather than that dust remembers accurately, and He does it gently in a man who has been sure for four years.

And there is one more thing worth putting on the table.

That room was full of people. She had a life going on that day that you knew nothing about. Whatever happened in her face had at least six possible causes and you were only ever able to see one of them.

You have been reading one line out of a page you were never shown, and it is written that He knows the frame and pities it rather than requiring it to see everything. The Spirit of God is the one who holds the rest of the page, and He has never once handed a man a verdict built out of one line.

Say it once and let the face go

So here is what to do, and it is two things and the first one is harder than it sounds.

Say the whole thing out loud, once, to one person. Somebody safe who was not there.

The whole thing. What you gave, what her face did, how long you have been carrying it, and how ridiculous the size of it feels when it is said in daylight.

You have a sentence that has never been out of your head, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an absurd sounding confession land safely. Psalm 103:14 has God saying out loud what a man is made of rather than leaving it unstated, and safely is the whole of it.

Let me say why saying it works, because it will feel pointless before it is done.

A rehearsal that only ever runs in one head never has to survive contact with anybody. It grows in exactly the conditions it needs. Said out loud to one person, it has to exist in a room with somebody who was not there, and it shrinks the moment it does.

You are able to take it out of the conditions it grew in, and it is written that He knoweth our frame rather than that a man must handle his frame alone. The Spirit of God is the one who arranges the person and the moment, and He has arranged a great many kitchens for exactly this.

And the second thing, which is a practice rather than an event.

When it comes back, and it will come back, do not argue with it. Do not go through the evidence again and do not try to talk yourself out of it, because arguing is another replay and it strengthens the thing it is fighting.

Say one sentence instead: that was four years ago and I have already said it out loud. And then go back to what your hands were doing.

You are able to stop a replay without winning an argument, and the Holy Spirit is the one who breaks a loop. His word puts God's pity on the frame rather than on the performance of the man in it, and He breaks it by giving a man somewhere else to go rather than something else to think.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who has replayed one face four hundred times.

You have been remembering a rehearsal rather than a face, and one wrong afternoon has never once been a verdict on you. Psalm 103:14 says for he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put that in a psalm about pity rather than about failure.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You are dust that He has never once overestimated, and no two seconds anywhere have ever been able to say what a man is to somebody. It is written that He remembereth that we are dust, and the Spirit of God is turning four years of sharpening into one telling out loud in a parking lot.

Say it once. Then let the face go.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Two seconds replayed four hundred times, you are not a memory any longer and you are not evidence. Psalm 103:14 says he knoweth our frame, he remembereth that we are dust, so by the Holy Spirit I say the whole thing out loud once this week, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Certainty that grew out of repetition, you have never once been the same thing as truth. The written word says He knows the frame and pities it, and by the Holy Spirit I stop arguing with the replay and I go back to my hands.
  3. Father, You have never once overestimated what I am made of, and I have been prosecuting myself for four years. Your word says he remembereth that we are dust, so by Your Spirit I take it out of my own head, and I let her face go.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
