The Gift MissedProverbs 17:9

I Accidentally Named The Thing She Was Ashamed Of

This message is for the woman whose gift landed exactly on the thing the other person was quietly ashamed of, who meant nothing by it and cannot undo what it looked like

You did not know.

That is the true sentence and it is also completely useless, because nobody can tell what somebody was thinking while she opened something.

You chose it warmly. You chose it because it seemed like her. And it landed, with total precision, on the exact thing she has been quietly ashamed of for about two years, and you found that out from her face and from the four seconds after it.

She recovered beautifully. She always does. She said something kind and the room moved on and nobody else in it noticed anything at all.

And you have not stopped since.

You have gone over it perhaps two hundred times. You have drafted the message. You have deleted the message. You have rehearsed a conversation that starts with, I want to say something about the other week.

There is a proverb about what actually separates people, and it is not what you think it is.

He that covereth a transgression

Here it is.

He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends. (Proverbs 17:9, King James Version)

Look at the second half first, because it is the one that speaks directly to what you are about to do.

He that repeateth a matter separateth very friends. Not he who causes offense. Not he who makes mistakes. He who repeats a matter.

The damage in that proverb is not in the original event. It is in the returning to it.

You have been about to do the one thing the proverb names as separating, and the Holy Spirit is the one who located it there. Proverbs 17:9 puts the harm in the repeating rather than in the matter itself, and He located it there in the middle of a book full of practical wisdom about people.

And very friends is a strong phrase. It means close ones, the ones who were genuinely joined.

The proverb is saying that the repeating does not damage a casual acquaintance. It damages the close ones, because the closeness is what makes the returning to it heavy.

You are being warned about a real friendship rather than a formality, and it is written that the repeating separates very friends rather than distant ones. The Spirit of God is the one who is protecting something here, and the thing He is protecting is the closeness itself.

Now the first half, and it needs saying carefully because the word gets misused.

He that covereth a transgression seeketh love. Covering there is not concealing and it is not pretending. It is declining to expose something again. It is the act of not going back over a thing that has already happened.

And it is described as seeking love. Actively. Covering is not passive avoidance; it is a move toward somebody.

You have a loving act available that consists entirely of not doing something, and the Holy Spirit is the one who framed it as a pursuit. The written word calls the covering a seeking of love rather than a failure of honesty, and it is one of the few pursuits that requires nothing but silence.

You did not name it. It landed on it.

Now let me correct the sentence that keeps getting used here, because it is not accurate.

The sentence goes: I named the thing she is ashamed of.

You did not name it. You had no access to it. What happened is that something you chose warmly landed on a spot you could not see, because the spot was hidden, deliberately, by her, for two years.

You have been confessing to something you did not do, and it is written that the matter separates when it is repeated rather than when it happens by accident. The Spirit of God is the one who corrects a false confession, and this one has been running for weeks.

And here is what the accident actually revealed, which is worth holding onto.

It revealed that she has been carrying something alone for two years and telling nobody, including you. That is a fact about her life rather than a fact about your judgment.

You have learned something about a friend rather than made a mistake about her, and His word puts the separating in the returning rather than in the discovering. The Holy Spirit is the one who lets a thing be seen without requiring it to be discussed.

And one more thing, and it is the reason the long apology would be a mistake.

A long apology would require her to talk about the thing she is ashamed of. That is what an apology asks for. It asks the other person to receive it, which means holding the subject up in the light for as long as it takes.

You would be repeating the matter and calling it kindness.

You are able to protect her by saying almost nothing, and it is written that he that covereth a transgression seeketh love. The Spirit of God is the one who shows a woman the difference between an apology that serves and one that asks, and this one would ask.

Cover it, and do not go back

So here is what to do, and almost all of it is subtraction.

Do not send the message. Do not start the conversation. Do not bring it up at all.

Go and see her, be ordinary, talk about ordinary things, and let the subject sit exactly where it fell without either of you touching it.

You are seeking love the moment you decide not to raise it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes ordinary company do what an apology cannot. Proverbs 17:9 calls the covering a pursuit rather than an omission, and it does it without asking her for one thing.

And if it comes up, which it may not, keep it to about six words.

Something like: I did not know, I am sorry. And then move on immediately to something else, before she has to decide how much to say.

Short is what makes it safe. Anything longer opens a door she has kept shut for two years, and she would then have to walk through it to be polite.

You have six words and no more, and it is written that the repeating separates very friends rather than that the silence does. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a sentence short in a woman who wants to say a great deal, and short is the entire mercy.

And here is what to do with the two hundred replays, because they are their own problem.

Every replay is a repeating. Not to her, but to yourself, and it runs on exactly the same mechanism the proverb is describing.

So when it comes back, say one thing: I did not know, and I am not going back to it. And then go and do something with your hands.

You are covering it in your own head the moment you stop returning to it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who breaks that loop. Scripture names the going over as the thing that separates, and He breaks it a little further every time it is refused.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman with a message she keeps deleting.

You have been repeating a matter that would settle if it were covered, and one wrong afternoon has never once been a verdict on you. Proverbs 17:9 says he that covereth a transgression seeketh love, but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put the separating in the returning.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You were never the one who named it, and no accident anywhere has ever been able to make a woman responsible for what somebody hid for two years. It is written that the covering seeks love, and the Spirit of God is turning eleven drafts of a message into one ordinary evening at a sink.

Cover it. That is the whole of it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Message I have written and deleted eleven times, you are not going out to her and you never were. Proverbs 17:9 says he that covereth a transgression seeketh love, so by the Holy Spirit I go and see her and I say nothing about it, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Sentence that says I named it, you have never once been an accurate account of what happened. The written word puts the separating in the repeating rather than in the accident, and by the Holy Spirit I stop confessing to something I did not do.
  3. Father, You called the covering of a thing a way of seeking somebody rather than a way of hiding. Your word says he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends, so by Your Spirit I stop returning to it in my own head, and I go and be ordinary with my friend.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
