The Gift MissedPsalm 34:5

I Found Out It Had Been Given Away

This message is for the man who discovered by accident that what he gave was passed on to somebody else, and has turned that discovery into a verdict on how much he is valued

You were not looking for it.

That is what has made it so hard to put down. If you had gone digging you would have some responsibility for what you found. You did not go digging. You were at a thing, and you saw it, and it took about a second and a half to understand.

And then you had to keep standing there with a plate in your hand for another two hours.

You did not say anything. Of course you did not. You have not said anything to anybody since, and that has been eight or nine weeks now.

And a sentence has settled into you that you would be embarrassed to say out loud, which is: that is what I am worth to them.

I want to go at that sentence, because the object's journey is not the evidence you have been treating it as.

There is a verse about shame and where it actually attaches, and it is one line long.

They looked unto him, and were lightened

Here it is.

They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed. (Psalm 34:5, King James Version)

Faces. The whole verse is about faces, which is exactly the register of what happened to you.

Shame is a face event. It happens in the face first, before any thought arrives, and everybody has felt the specific heat of it. The psalm goes straight at that.

You have had a face event that you have been treating as information, and the Holy Spirit is the one who chose that word. Psalm 34:5 puts the shame and the lightening both in the face rather than in the facts, and choosing it says He knows exactly what this is.

Now the mechanism the verse describes, because it is a movement rather than a state.

They looked unto him, and were lightened. The lightening follows a look. It is not a conclusion anybody reasoned their way to and it is not a decision to feel differently.

Something happens to a face when the eyes move to a different place.

You have been looking in the direction the shame came from, and it is written that they looked unto him and were lightened rather than that they worked it out. The Spirit of God is the one who does the lightening, and He does it in response to where a man's attention goes.

And then the last clause, which is a promise about a specific thing.

Their faces were not ashamed. Not: they got over it eventually. Not: they were comforted about it. The shame did not stick.

That is the claim. A face that looks up does not hold it.

You are not built to hold this permanently, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in an ordinary week. The written word says their faces were not ashamed rather than that the shame was managed, and He does it without requiring anything to be explained to anybody.

What an object's journey means

Now let me deal with the evidence, because one interpretation has been running here and there are several.

An object that moves from one house to another has a journey with many possible reasons in it.

It did not fit that house. Somebody else needed it more and it was a good use. It was passed on in a hurry with four other things at a time when that family was under pressure. It was given to somebody who was known to want exactly that. Or it was given away carelessly, which is also possible, and is one option among many rather than the obvious one.

You have been selecting the worst reading from a list, and it is written that the face that looks up is not ashamed rather than that the reasons are all known. The Spirit of God is the one who holds the reasons you were never shown, and He has never once handed a man a verdict out of one sighting.

And here is the specific error, and it is worth naming because you have made it more than once in your life.

You read the journey of a thing as a statement about a person. Objects move for practical reasons and people feel things for entirely different reasons, and the two are far less connected than they look from a hall with a plate in your hand.

You are not what happened to a thing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates a man from an object's history. His word locates the whole business in a face turned in the right direction, and the separation is the whole rest of this.

And the plain thing about your own reaction, said without any judgment.

Feeling that was not weak and it was not vanity. Anybody would. Giving something is a small act of exposure and finding out where it ended up touches the exposed part directly.

You are allowed to have felt what you felt, and it is written that the faces were not ashamed rather than that the shame was never real. The Spirit of God is the one who does not require a man to pretend it did not land.

Say nothing, and give again

So here is what to do, and both halves of it are hard in different ways.

The first half is to say nothing about it. Ever. Not to them, not to anybody else in that family, not as a joke in three years.

There is no version of raising it that does not cost more than the silence does. If it was careless, saying it changes nothing and creates an awkwardness that outlives everybody's memory of the object. If it was not careless, saying it accuses somebody of something they did not do.

You have a silence that protects everybody including you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a kept silence a strength rather than a swallowing. Psalm 34:5 puts the remedy in a look upward rather than in a conversation, and the difference is whether it has been looked at.

And the second half, which is the real work.

Give to the same person again. Next time. Without adjusting the size, without stepping back, and without a small private amendment nobody would ever see.

Because the alternative is a slow withdrawal that will be visible to them within about two years and will never be explainable.

You are able to give again without protecting yourself, and it is written that they looked unto him and were lightened rather than that they withdrew and recovered. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a man from a retreat that would cost him a relationship he still wants.

And when the picture comes back, which it will for a while, do the thing the verse describes.

Do not argue with it. Look up. Say one sentence to God about it, even a blunt one, and then put your attention on whatever is in front of you.

You are lightened at the point where the eyes move, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is being looked at. Scripture puts the whole change in the looking rather than in the reasoning, and He does not need the sentence to be well constructed.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who saw something on a table.

You have been reading a verdict off an object's journey, and one wrong afternoon has never once been a verdict on you. Psalm 34:5 says they looked unto him, and were lightened, and their faces were not ashamed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put the whole remedy in a change of where the eyes go.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You are not what happened to a thing on a table, and no second and a half anywhere has ever been able to price what a man is worth to a family. It is written that their faces were not ashamed, and the Spirit of God is turning eight weeks of a private sentence into a look in a different direction.

Say nothing. Give again. Look up.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Second and a half in that hall, you are not a statement about how much I am valued. Psalm 34:5 says they looked unto him and were lightened, so by the Holy Spirit I say nothing about it and I give to them again next time, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Sentence I would be embarrassed to say out loud, you have never once been the only reading of what happened. The written word says their faces were not ashamed, and by the Holy Spirit I stop arguing with the picture and I look up instead.
  3. Father, You put the whole remedy in a look and never once in an explanation. Your word says they looked unto him, and were lightened, so by Your Spirit I take my eyes off that table, and I go on giving without protecting myself.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
