The Gift MissedRomans 12:10

I Knew Immediately I Had Got It Wrong

This message is for the woman who read the half second before the thank you and has been living inside that half second ever since, carrying a shame far larger than the event

You saw it before she did.

There is a half second between a thing being opened and a face arriving at what it is going to do, and in that half second everything is visible.

And you read it, and you knew, and then the thank you came and it was warm and generous and slightly too quick, and she was lovely about it and has never mentioned it since.

That was some time ago now.

And you are still in the room. You have replayed it enough times that you can slow it down. You know what her hand did. You know what the light was like.

And a shame has grown around it that is enormously out of proportion to what actually happened, which was that a person gave another person something that did not suit them.

Nobody would understand the size of it if you described it, which is why you never have. I am not going to laugh it off, because it is not funny and it is not small to you.

Kindly affectioned one to another

Here is the verse, and it is about the traffic between two people rather than about anything passing between them.

Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another. (Romans 12:10, King James Version)

Kindly affectioned. That is a settled state between two people, a warmth that is already there and is not created or destroyed by any single event.

It is the weather of a relationship rather than a day in it.

You have been treating one afternoon as though it could change the weather, and the Holy Spirit is the one who described it as a standing state. Romans 12:10 describes an affection that is held between people rather than produced by an occasion, and a standing state does not turn on ten seconds.

Now the second phrase, and it is doing something quietly important here.

In honor preferring one another. Preferring is a direction. It is what a person is aiming at, over years, in a thousand small acts.

Everything you did in the run up to that afternoon was that. The thinking, the choosing, the hoping it would land. All of it was preferring her, and none of it is undone by the fact that the object was wrong.

You have been preferring her the whole time, and it is written that the honor is in the preferring rather than in the accuracy of what arrives. The Spirit of God is the one who reads the aim rather than the result, and He read that afternoon correctly at the time.

And here is what the verse does not do, and the absence matters.

It never once measures anybody by outcome. There is no clause about whether the affection landed, whether it was received well, or whether the other person understood it. The instruction is entirely about direction.

You are being measured by where you were pointed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put no outcome anywhere in that verse. His word names the preferring rather than the success of it, and He left it out on purpose.

The shame is bigger than the event

Now let me say the thing about the size of this, because it has been carried alone for a long time.

The event was small. A person chose something that did not suit somebody. That happens constantly, everywhere, to everybody, and it is one of the most ordinary things human beings do.

The shame is not small. It is a great deal larger than the event and it has been running for a long time, and there is a reason for that.

You have a disproportion here that is worth naming, and it is written that the affection between people is a standing thing rather than a scoreboard. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a person say out loud that a reaction is out of proportion without calling them foolish for having it.

And here is why it is out of proportion.

Giving something to somebody is a statement about how well you know them. In that half second, what you thought you saw was not a verdict on an object. It was a verdict on how well you know her, delivered instantly, by her face, before she could stop it.

That is why it went so deep. It was not about the thing.

You were reading an answer to a much larger question, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a person what they were actually asking in a moment. Scripture settles that question by preferring rather than by any single reading, and the asking was never about a parcel.

And here is the correction, and it is a genuine one.

A gift that misses is evidence about one guess. It is not evidence about a relationship, and it is certainly not evidence about you, and the size of the shame has been coming from a category error rather than from anything real.

You are not what one wrong guess said about you, and it is written that the preferring is one to another rather than dependent on getting anything right. The Spirit of God is the one who corrects a category error, and this one has been running for months.

Say one honest sentence, or decide once

So here is what to do, and there are two roads and both of them are legitimate.

The first road is one sentence, said lightly, with no apology on the end of it.

I got that wrong, did I not. And then a small laugh, and then straight on to something else. That is the entire speech. It is not a confession and it does not invite a response.

You have one short sentence available that ends it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a light sentence land lightly. Romans 12:10 puts the affection between two people rather than in what passed between them, and lightly is the whole instruction.

Let me say why it works, because it looks too small to work.

The half second has been alive because it was never spoken. An unspoken thing between two people keeps its full size and keeps all of its authority, because it never has to survive being said in daylight.

Said out loud, in one sentence, with a laugh, it turns into what it actually is: a thing that happened once.

You are able to shrink it by saying it, and it is written that the two of you are kindly affectioned one to another rather than balanced on an occasion. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a said thing smaller than an unsaid one, and that is nearly always the direction it runs.

And the second road, which is equally honest.

Decide once, deliberately, that it is not getting raised. Not avoiding it. Deciding. Say to yourself, out loud if it helps, that it happened, that it is over, and that it goes no further than this.

The difference between avoiding and deciding is enormous. Avoiding keeps it alive by requiring maintenance. A decision closes it.

You are allowed to close it without a conversation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a decision hold. The written word measures a relationship by its standing affection rather than by anything cleared up, and He holds it for the months when it would otherwise reopen.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman still standing in one half second.

You are not the parcel that missed, and one wrong afternoon has never once been a verdict on you. Romans 12:10 says be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love, in honor preferring one another, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put the whole thing in the preferring rather than in the landing.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You have been preferring her every single time, and no half second anywhere has ever been able to price how well one woman knows another. It is written that the affection is one to another, and the Spirit of God is turning fourteen months in a room into one light sentence at a kitchen table.

Say it, or decide. Either one ends it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Half second before the thank you, you are not a verdict on how well I know her. Romans 12:10 says be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love, so by the Holy Spirit I say one light sentence this week or I decide once and close it, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Shame far larger than the afternoon, you have never once been in proportion. The written word puts the honor in the preferring rather than in the accuracy, and by the Holy Spirit I stop treating one wrong guess as evidence about me.
  3. Father, You measure the aim and never the landing, and I have been marking myself on the landing for fourteen months. Your word says in honor preferring one another, so by Your Spirit I put it down where it happened, and I give her something else this year.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
