Made Not BoughtColossians 3:23

I Put Something Beside It So It Would Not Stand Alone

This message is for the woman who cannot let a made thing be given on its own and always sets something else next to it, and who has never noticed that the propping is the apology

You have never given a made thing on its own.

Not once. There is always something with it. A second, smaller thing, set next to it, so that the made one is not the only thing in the room.

And you have never thought about it, because it does not feel like a decision. It feels like being thorough.

But last time you caught yourself. You had the made thing finished and wrapped and you went out specifically to find something to go with it, and standing there you heard the actual sentence for the first time.

If there is something else there, it will not just be the thing I made.

That is not thoroughness. That is a support. And a thing that needs supporting is a thing you have privately assessed as unable to stand.

There is a verse about who any work is actually being done for, and it moves the whole question.

As to the Lord, and not unto men

Here it is.

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men. (Colossians 3:23, King James Version)

Whatsoever ye do. That is deliberately wide. It is not about religious work and it is not about anything set apart. It covers hands and hours and ordinary output.

Which means the thing you made is in that sentence.

You have been making something that this verse already covers, and Colossians 3:23 says whatsoever ye do rather than naming any particular kind of work. The Holy Spirit is the one who made that phrase as wide as it is, and He made it wide so nothing would fall outside it.

Now the word heartily, which is doing something specific.

It means from the soul, with the whole of a person in it. It is a description of how the work is done rather than of how good the result is, and there is no standard of output anywhere in the verse.

You are being measured by how the hours went in rather than by how the thing looks on a table, and it is written that the doing is to be hearty rather than impressive. The Spirit of God is the one who set that standard, and it is a standard a person can actually meet.

And then the two audiences, and this is where your second thing gets exposed.

As to the Lord, and not unto men. Two possible audiences for the same act, and the verse chooses between them and does not split the difference.

The second thing beside it is aimed entirely at the second audience. It exists to manage what a room concludes, which is exactly the audience the verse sets aside.

You have been working for the wrong room, and His word names the Lord as the audience and men as the alternative rather than as the other half of it. The Holy Spirit is the one who chose between those two, and He chose in a way that makes the propping unnecessary.

The propping is the apology

Now let me say what the second thing actually communicates, because it does communicate, and it is not what you intend.

Nobody in that room thinks: how thorough. What registers, below the level of anybody putting it into words, is that one of these needed the other one there.

And the person receiving it feels which one is which almost immediately.

You have been sending a message underneath the one you meant, and it is written that the work is done as to the Lord rather than arranged for the room. The Spirit of God is the one who shows a woman what an arrangement said, and it said something she would never have said out loud.

And there is a cost to the made thing itself.

It does not get looked at on its own. It gets looked at as part of a pair, and in a pair one item is always read as the main one, and it will not be yours.

Six weeks of your hours end up as the accompaniment to something that took eleven minutes.

You have been putting your own hours in second place, and Scripture puts the value in how the work was done rather than in what it is standing next to. The Holy Spirit is the one who values hours nobody can see, and He has never once ranked them below anything.

And a plain word about the second thing itself, because this is not a lecture about buying.

There is nothing wrong with giving somebody something you found. Half the good things anybody has ever received were found rather than made, and nobody here is being told to stop.

The problem is not the object. It is the job that object has been given.

You are able to keep buying things for people, and it is written that whatsoever ye do is to be done heartily rather than that one kind of giving outranks another. The Spirit of God is the one who separates a thing from the role it is playing, and here the role is the whole problem.

Let it stand on its own

So here is what to do, and it is one thing removed rather than anything added.

Give the made thing on its own. Nothing beside it. Nothing small to go with it. Nothing at all.

You are able to send it in alone, and Colossians 3:23 puts the audience with the Lord rather than with the people at the table. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a single thing enough, and it has been enough every year without anybody knowing.

And expect the pull, because it arrives about two days before.

There will be a moment where going out to find something small feels like the obvious and responsible thing to do, and it will not feel like propping at all. It will feel like care.

That is the moment. Recognize it and do not go.

You have one moment to get through and it lasts about an afternoon, and it is written that the work is done as to the Lord rather than adjusted for men. The Spirit of God is the one who holds a woman still through an afternoon like that, and it is the whole of the discipline.

And when you hand it over, say nothing about it standing alone either.

Do not say I did not get you anything else. Do not say this is all there is this year. That would be the propping again, in words instead of objects, and words do it faster.

Say their name and let it be the only thing in the room.

You are letting it stand the moment you stop introducing it, and the written word puts the whole audience in one place rather than splitting it. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries a single thing across a table, and it does not need anything alongside it to arrive.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has never let one stand alone.

You have been propping up something that was standing fine, and time given has never once been the poorer currency. Colossians 3:23 says whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men, and the Holy Spirit is the one who chose between those two audiences rather than dividing the work between them.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You are not required to arrange a room's opinion, and no second thing anywhere has ever made a made thing stronger by standing next to it. It is written that the doing is hearty and aimed at the Lord, and the Spirit of God is turning years of propping into one thing set down on a table by itself.

Let it stand. That is the whole of it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Second thing I always go out for, you are not coming with me this year. Colossians 3:23 says whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men, so by the Holy Spirit I give the made thing on its own and I say only her name, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Habit that calls itself being thorough, you have never once been anything but an apology in advance. The written word puts the audience with the Lord rather than with the room, and by the Holy Spirit I stop arranging what anybody concludes.
  3. Father, You said whatsoever, and my hours are inside that word. Your word says to do it heartily as to the Lord and not unto men, so by Your Spirit I stop putting my own work in second place, and I let it stand on its own.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
