She Said She Did Not Want Anything

This message is for the man whose wife said it twice and who heard it once, and who is being asked for himself and keeps answering with objects

She said it twice.

That is the detail you have been turning over, because the first time is nothing. Everybody says it the first time. It is what people say.

The second time was different. It was a few weeks later and it was not part of any conversation about that, and it came out flat and quiet in the middle of something else.

I really do not want anything. I would rather just have you for an evening.

And you heard it. You did hear it. And then some part of you filed it as a lovely thing to say and went back to the problem of what to get her, which is the problem you know how to work on.

Because you can solve that one. You have never been able to solve the other one, and you are not entirely sure what solving it would even look like.

There is a verse about being with people that is two lines long and contains no objects at all.

Rejoice with them that do rejoice

Here it is.

Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. (Romans 12:15, King James Version)

Two instructions, and look at the word that both of them turn on.

With. Not for. Not about. Not on behalf of. With, which is a word about location rather than about activity.

Nothing in that verse is produced or delivered or handed over. The whole instruction is about where a person is standing.

You have been reading a verse with no output anywhere in it, and Romans 12:15 puts the whole thing in the word with rather than in anything that gets done. The Holy Spirit is the one who built both halves on the same preposition, and the preposition is the entire instruction.

Now the range it covers, because it is deliberately both ends.

Rejoice with them that do rejoice. Weep with them that weep. The good day and the bad one, and the same instruction in both.

That is a description of somebody who is there and nothing else, across whatever a life is doing at the time. It is not a skill and it is not an achievement.

You are being asked for presence across everything rather than performance at the high points, and it is written as both rejoicing and weeping rather than either one. The Spirit of God is the one who covered the whole range in two lines, and covering both is what makes it about a person rather than an occasion.

And here is what it says about what your wife asked for.

She asked for the thing the verse is describing. Not a lesser version of a gift. The thing the New Testament names when it is talking about what love actually does between two people.

You have been handed a request for the largest item on the list, and the written word names being with somebody rather than providing for them. The Holy Spirit is the one who put that at the center of a chapter about love, and it is there rather than anything that could be wrapped.

Why objects are easier

Now let me say why you went back to the other problem, because it is not thoughtlessness and it deserves an honest name.

An object is a finite task. It has a beginning and an end, it can be done well, and when it is done it is done and a man can look at it and know he has completed something.

An evening is not a task. There is no way to be good at it, no way to know it went well, and nothing to hold up afterward.

You have been choosing the problem that can be finished, and it is written that the instruction is to be with somebody rather than to complete anything. The Spirit of God is the one who names that honestly, and the honesty takes the shame out of it.

And there is a second thing under it, which is the real one.

An object stands between two people. An evening does not. Four hours with nothing to do and no purpose in them is four hours of being entirely available, and available is exposing in a way that a man does not have words for.

You have been putting something between the two of you without meaning to, and His word puts a person beside another person with nothing in the space. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes an object out of the middle, and out of the middle is the whole of what she asked for.

And one thing about her request, which is worth hearing correctly.

She did not say she does not want anything from you. She said she wants you. Those are opposite sentences and they have been getting read as the same one.

You are the thing being asked for, and it is written that the rejoicing and the weeping are both done with rather than for. The Spirit of God is the one who translates a sentence that has been misheard twice, and it has been the same sentence both times.

Give her the evening

So here is what to do, and the details are the whole of it because the details are where this gets lost.

Name a day. Not soon, not sometime, not when things calm down. A day, this week, said out loud to her so that it exists.

You are able to name a day out loud, and Romans 12:15 asks for a person to be with somebody rather than to intend to be. The Holy Spirit is the one who turns a general willingness into a Tuesday, and the Tuesday is the entire difference.

And put the phone in another room. Not face down. Another room.

Face down is still in the room and everybody in that room knows it is still in the room, including you, and part of your attention stays with it the whole evening without you noticing.

You are able to put it somewhere else entirely, and it is written that the being with is the instruction rather than the being nearby. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a small physical act do something a decision cannot, and this is one of those.

And do not plan the evening.

No activity. No film. No going anywhere. Those are all objects in a different form and they do the same job, which is to stand between two people and give everybody something to look at.

Sit down with her and let it be unstructured and let the first twenty minutes be slightly awkward, because they will be.

You are able to let it be shapeless, and the passage puts the whole thing in the word with rather than in anything arranged. The Holy Spirit is the one who is in an unplanned evening, and He is more in it than in a planned one.

And then ask her one question and stay for the whole answer.

Not how are you. Something with edges. What has this year actually been like for you. What has been the hardest part of it. And then stop talking, and leave the gap, and do not fill it.

You are giving her the thing she asked for the moment you stop talking, and it is written that the rejoicing and the weeping are done with somebody rather than at them. The Spirit of God is the one who does the work in a gap, and the gap is the part most men cannot leave alone.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who heard it once.

You are the gift being asked for tonight, and being there has never once been the consolation option. Romans 12:15 says rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep, and the Holy Spirit is the one who built the whole instruction on the word with.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You have been asked for the largest thing on the list, and no object anywhere has ever been able to do what an unplanned evening does. It is written that the rejoicing and the weeping are both done with somebody, and the Spirit of God is turning a sentence heard once into a Tuesday with the phone in another room.

Name the day. Give her the evening.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Problem of what to get her, you are not the question she asked me twice. Romans 12:15 says rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep, so by the Holy Spirit I name a day out loud this week and I put the phone in another room, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Instinct to put something between us, you have never once been about her. The written word builds the whole instruction on the word with rather than on anything handed over, and by the Holy Spirit I plan nothing and I sit down.
  3. Father, You put being with somebody at the center of a chapter about love and You did not name one object. Your word says rejoice with them that do rejoice, so by Your Spirit I stop solving the problem I can finish, and I give her the evening.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
