Less To SpendPsalm 34:18

I Put More On That Card Than I Can Pay

This message is for the woman who committed more than she can cover, knows she did it to avoid one feeling for one afternoon, and is now carrying both the feeling and the commitment

You knew while you were doing it.

That is the part that has been hardest to sit with. There was a moment, and it was not long, where a very clear voice said do not, and you went ahead anyway, and the whole thing took about ninety seconds.

And then there was relief. Real relief, for about half a day.

Since then you have been carrying two things instead of one.

There is the commitment, which is a fact and sits there and does not move. And there is the feeling, which is exactly the same feeling as before, having not gone anywhere, because feelings are not the sort of thing that can be settled that way.

I am not going to talk to you about the commitment. That is not what this is and there is nothing useful I could say about it that you have not already thought.

I want to talk about the feeling, because that is the thing that was actually being bought, and it is still available to deal with, and dealing with it costs nothing at all.

Nigh unto them that are of a broken heart

Here is the verse.

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. (Psalm 34:18, King James Version)

Nigh unto. Near to. That is a statement about proximity and it is worth noticing what it does not say.

It does not say He mends the heart first and then draws near. It does not say He waits for the situation to be tidied up. The nearness is to the broken condition itself, in the state it is in, before anything has been fixed.

You have somebody near you in the exact condition you are in, and the Holy Spirit is the one who wrote the order of that sentence. Psalm 34:18 puts the nearness to the broken heart rather than to the repaired one, and the order is the whole comfort in it.

Now the second half, because the word is easy to misread.

Contrite spirit. That word has been used to mean grovelling, and it does not mean that. It means crushed, broken small, the state of a person who has run out of the ability to hold themselves together on the subject.

It is a description of a condition rather than a performance of remorse.

You are not required to perform anything to be reached, and it is written that He saveth such as be of a contrite spirit rather than such as apologize adequately. The Spirit of God is the one who defined that word by condition, and a condition is something a person has rather than achieves.

And here is what the verse does not do, which matters enormously.

It does not comment on how the person arrived at the broken heart. There is no examination in it. No sorting of the deserving from the careless. The nearness is offered to the condition, full stop.

You have not been asked to account for how you got here, and the Holy Spirit is the one who left that question out. The written word names the state and never once asks after the cause, and He left it out on purpose.

What was actually being bought

Now let me name what happened in that ninety seconds, because it will help to see it plainly and without any lecture attached.

It was never an object that was being got. What was being got was one afternoon without a particular feeling in it.

That feeling has a name, and only you know what it is. Not being able to give what you wanted to give. Being seen to have less. Watching a specific person receive something smaller than you had in your head for them.

That is what was being bought. Half a day of relief from one feeling, and the price was a number.

You were buying an afternoon rather than an object, and it is written that the LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart. The Spirit of God is the one who is willing to be near the exact feeling that ninety seconds was spent avoiding.

And here is the uncomfortable arithmetic of it, said gently.

The feeling was never removable that way. It is still there, unchanged, waiting. And now it has a companion.

That is not a moral verdict. It is a mechanical fact about what money can and cannot reach, and nobody discovers it except by trying it.

You have run into the edge of what a number can do, and the Holy Spirit is the one who meets a person exactly there. His word puts the nearness where the money could not go, and He does not charge anything for the crossing.

And I want to say one more thing before we move, because there is a voice that will be loud here.

Wanting to give something lovely to somebody you love is not a fault. It is not greed and it does not need repenting of. The want was good. Only the route was not.

You are not in trouble for wanting to give well, and it is written that He is near the broken heart rather than near the blameless one. The Spirit of God is the one who separates a good desire from a bad route, and He has never once confused them.

Face the thing the ninety seconds was avoiding

So here is what to do, and it has nothing to do with the number and everything to do with the feeling.

Say it out loud. Once. To one person.

Not the whole situation and not the figure. The feeling. I could not stand the idea of giving her less than that and I did something about it that I should not have.

You have a sentence available to you that costs nothing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a sentence like that land safely. Psalm 34:18 says He is near to the broken heart rather than to the composed one, and He is in the room before it gets said.

And here is why saying it out loud matters more than thinking it.

A feeling that stays inside a person keeps its full size. It also keeps its authority, because it never has to survive contact with anybody. Said out loud to one safe person, it shrinks to something a human being can actually look at.

That is not a trick. It is what the verse describes. Nearness happens to a broken heart, and a broken heart that is hidden is being kept out of reach of the very thing offered to it.

You are moving toward the nearness the moment you say it, and it is written that He saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. The Spirit of God is the one who does the drawing near, and He draws near to what is out in the open rather than to what is being managed.

And expect it to come out badly. Let it.

It does not need to be well phrased. It will probably be too blunt or too small or it will arrive at a strange moment while somebody is filling a kettle. None of that matters. The saying is the whole thing.

You are not required to say it well, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a badly said true thing. Scripture names a crushed spirit rather than an articulate one, and He has been carrying those since people first started saying them.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman carrying two things instead of one.

You have been carrying a feeling and a commitment when only one of them was ever real, and a smaller gift has never once been a smaller love. Psalm 34:18 says the LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put the nearness before any repair.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You are near to God in exactly the condition you are in, and no ninety seconds anywhere has ever been able to put a woman outside the reach of that verse. It is written that He saveth such as be of a contrite spirit, and the Spirit of God is turning a thing carried alone since September into one sentence said out loud in a doorway.

Say it once. That is the whole of it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Ninety seconds in the autumn, you are not a thing that puts me out of reach of God. Psalm 34:18 says the LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, so by the Holy Spirit I say one true sentence out loud to one safe person this week, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Feeling I tried to buy an afternoon away from, you have never once been settled by a number. The written word says He saveth such as be of a contrite spirit and asks nothing about how anybody arrived, and by the Holy Spirit I bring it out where it can be reached.
  3. Father, You come near to a broken heart and You do not wait for it to be repaired first. Your word says You are nigh unto them of a broken heart, so by Your Spirit I stop managing this on my own, and I say it out loud badly to one person.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
