Less To SpendPsalm 37:16

My Children Have Started Saying They Want Nothing

This message is for the mother whose children have worked out the arithmetic on their own and started saying they do not want much, and who is undone by being protected by her own children

The oldest one said it first, over a bowl of cereal, without looking up.

Honestly, I do not need anything this year.

And then a few days later the younger one said something similar, in a different way, in the voice they use when they have rehearsed a sentence and are trying to make it sound spontaneous.

They have worked it out.

Nobody told them. You were careful. You did the low voice in the kitchen and the conversations after they went up. And they worked it out anyway, the way children do, from the things that stopped happening and the things you started saying no to.

And now they are covering for you.

That is what has taken the legs out from under you, and it has nothing to do with money. Your children have looked at the situation and decided to make themselves smaller so that you do not have to feel it.

There is a line in the psalms about a little, and it is not the line people usually reach for.

A little that a righteous man hath

Here it is.

A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. (Psalm 37:16, King James Version)

Notice what it is not saying, because that is where most of the comfort in it lives.

It is not saying that a little is fine. It is not saying it is enough, or that it will do, or that it is the thought that counts. It says better. A straight comparison, with a winner in it.

You have been handed a comparison that comes out in your favor, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put the word better in that sentence. Psalm 37:16 calls a little better rather than acceptable, and He did not put in any of the softer ones available to Him.

And look at what the comparison is actually between.

Not between a little and a lot. Between a little that a righteous person has and the riches of many. The verse is comparing households, not amounts. It is saying that the whole state of one house is better than the whole state of another, and the money is only one item in the accounting.

You are being measured by what is in your house rather than by what is under the tree, and it is written that the little of a righteous man is better than the riches of many. The Spirit of God is the one who does that accounting, and He includes things no page of arithmetic has room for.

So put your house on that scale honestly for a second.

In your house, two children noticed their mother was under strain and, without being asked, decided to carry some of it. Nobody taught them that in a lesson. They learned it from watching somebody.

You have raised people who look after each other, and the Holy Spirit is the one who grows that in children. The written word weighs a whole household rather than one line of a budget, and He grew it in yours through years nobody was measuring.

They are not asking for less

Now let me say what is actually happening on their side, because it has been read one way and there is another.

They are not disappointed in advance. They are not lowering their expectations because they have decided you cannot deliver. That is the reading that has been keeping you awake and it is not what is going on.

They are doing something much simpler. They love you and they can see you are carrying something, and they are trying to take a bit of the weight off in the only currency available to a child.

You are watching love do the only thing it can think of, and it is written that a little in a righteous house outweighs riches somewhere else. The Spirit of God is the one who reads a child's sentence correctly, and He is not hearing disappointment in it either.

And here is the part that will hurt slightly and is worth hearing anyway.

They said it out loud. Both of them. That took something. A child who says I do not need anything is stepping into a grown up conversation without being invited, and it costs them something to do it.

To let that go past without any response at all is to leave them holding it on their own.

You have something to give them right now that costs nothing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts a mother in a position to hand something back. His word sets the state of a house above the size of what is in it, and this one does not require a single thing to be bought.

And I want to be plain about one thing before we go further, because there is a version of this that would be a lie.

Do not tell them everything is fine. They already know it is not, they worked it out themselves, and a reassurance that contradicts what they can see teaches them that you cannot be asked about real things.

You are able to tell them something true instead, and Psalm 37:16 makes a plain comparison rather than a comforting one. The Spirit of God is the one who holds a mother steady enough to say a true sentence out loud to a child.

Tell them one true thing

So here is what to say, and it is short, and it is not a family meeting.

Three parts, and it fits in about fifteen seconds.

This year is a thin one and they were right that something is going on. It is not because of anything either of you did. And I noticed what you said, and it meant a great deal to me.

That is all. No figures. No explanation of the situation. No promises about next year and no account of what you are doing about it.

You have exactly the right amount of information to give them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a mother from saying either too much or too little. It is written that a little in the right house is better than riches in the wrong one, and both of those are real dangers here.

Let me say why each part matters.

The first part tells them they are not imagining it, which stops the quiet worry that comes from sensing something nobody will confirm.

The second part is the one that matters most. Children in a thin year almost always run a private theory that it is somehow their fault, or connected to something they asked for. Saying it out loud kills that before it can grow.

You are able to take a false verdict off a child, and Scripture puts the state of a righteous house above the size of anything in it. The Spirit of God is the one who gets to a child's private theory before it hardens, and He does it through one plain sentence from a parent.

And the third part is the one you will want to skip, and it is the reason to do this at all.

Thank them. Say you noticed. Because a child who does a generous thing and gets no acknowledgment learns that generosity is invisible, and a child who is thanked for it learns something they will carry into every house they ever live in.

You are teaching them something in that one sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a fifteen second conversation land for twenty years. It is written that the little of a righteous man is better than the riches of many, and He has done that in kitchens for a very long time.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a mother whose children have started protecting her.

You have children who are looking after you, and a smaller gift has never once been a smaller love. Psalm 37:16 says a little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked, and the Holy Spirit is the one who chose the word better rather than any of the gentler ones.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You are the house that verse calls better, and no thin year anywhere has ever been able to prove what a mother is to her own children. It is written that the little is better than the riches of many, and the Spirit of God is turning a sentence over a cereal bowl into fifteen seconds of the truth said out loud.

Tell them the true thing. That is the whole of it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Sentence my child rehearsed before saying it, you are not a lowered expectation and you never were. Psalm 37:16 says a little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many, so by the Holy Spirit I say three true sentences to my children this week, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Shame that my children carry any of this, you have never once been the whole picture. The written word calls the little of a righteous house better rather than acceptable, and by the Holy Spirit I thank them out loud instead of going quiet.
  3. Father, You watched two children decide to make themselves smaller so their mother would not feel it. Your word says a little in a righteous house is better than riches, so by Your Spirit I tell them the truth about the year, and I let them know I saw what they did.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
