Less To Spend2 Corinthians 10:12

My Sister Always Gives The Bigger One

This message is for the woman who has been quietly losing a comparison with her sister for years, and who has begun to give against her sister rather than to the person in front of her

She is not doing it on purpose.

That is the first thing to say, because you already know it and it has never once helped.

Your sister has more room this year and she has had more room most years, and what she brings is generous and warmly meant and she has never in her life said one word about anybody else's.

And every year you watch it come out, and every year something in your chest does the same small drop, and then you spend the rest of the afternoon being perfectly fine about it.

That is not the part that has been bothering you lately, though.

What has been bothering you is that you have started choosing differently because of her. Not consciously at first. But you have begun asking a question that has nothing to do with the person you are giving to, and the question is: how will this look next to hers.

That is a different activity from giving. And there is a verse that describes exactly what it is.

Measuring themselves by themselves

Here is the line, and it is unusually blunt.

but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. (2 Corinthians 10:12, King James Version)

Are not wise. That is Paul's verdict, and he does not soften it and he does not call it a sin either. He calls it unwise, which is a specific and useful word.

Unwise means it does not work. It is not condemned as wicked, it is dismissed as useless. A person doing it is not being bad, they are running a method that cannot produce anything.

You have been running a method rather than committing an offense, and the Holy Spirit is the one who chose that word. 2 Corinthians 10:12 calls the comparing unwise rather than wicked, and the choice takes the shame out without taking the problem away.

Now look at why it does not work, because the verse explains itself.

Measuring themselves by themselves. The measure and the thing being measured come from the same place. There is no fixed point anywhere in the system, and a measurement with no fixed point cannot tell you anything.

Your sister's giving is not a scale. It has no more claim to be a standard than yours does. It is one household's circumstance sitting next to another household's circumstance, and neither of them was ever the ruler.

You are holding something that was never a measuring instrument, and it is written that comparing among themselves is not wise because there is nothing fixed in it. The Spirit of God is the one who supplies a fixed point, and He has never once located it in a sibling.

And here is what makes the verse merciful rather than corrective.

It never says the comparison is inaccurate. It does not tell you that you imagined the difference. Something larger did come out of that bag, and pretending otherwise would be a lie and would not help you.

It says the exercise is pointless. Different thing entirely.

You have not been imagining anything, and the written word attacks the usefulness of the measuring rather than the eyesight of the person doing it. The Holy Spirit is the one who lets a woman be right about the facts and free of them at the same time.

The person who is actually receiving it

Now the part that matters most, which is the cost.

Somewhere in the last few years the person on the receiving end stopped being the subject. They are still the recipient, but they are no longer the question. The question became your sister.

And whatever you hand over now has been shaped by an argument they know nothing about, with somebody who is not even a party to it.

You have been aiming past the person in front of you, and it is written that measuring by one another produces nothing wise. The Spirit of God is the one who moves a subject back into the middle of the room, and He does it without any accusation attached.

Think about what that has cost the thing itself.

A gift chosen to survive a comparison has to be defensible. It has to hold up. And defensible is a completely different quality from suitable, and it usually produces something a little larger, a little safer, and a good deal less specific to the person.

You are able to choose something indefensible and exactly right, and 2 Corinthians 10:12 clears the whole comparison out of the way as useless. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a specific small thing land where a defensible large one glances off.

And I want to name the thing underneath, because it is not envy and calling it envy would be unfair.

You want them to know you love them as much as she does. That is what is actually going on. It has never been about the sister at all. It has been about being sure that the love got through in a room where love is being measured by volume.

You have been trying to make sure something arrives, and the written word dismisses the measuring rather than the love that reached for it. The Spirit of God is the one who tells the difference between wanting more and wanting to be sure, and this has always been the second one.

Take her out of the frame

So here is the practical move, and it happens before you choose anything.

Take her out of the frame entirely. Not out of the room, out of the frame. She will be at that table and she will bring something lovely and none of that is the question.

Ask instead: what would I choose for this person if my sister were not going to exist that day.

You have a different question available to you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who hands a woman a better question. His word says the comparing among themselves produces nothing useful, and a better question does more here than any amount of resolve.

And then when the answer comes, expect it to feel too small.

It will. That is not a sign of a wrong answer, it is a sign that the old measure is still running in the background, and the old measure only knows one direction.

Give it anyway. Give the thing that fits the person rather than the thing that would hold up next to something else.

You are giving to the right person the second the comparison drops out, and it is written that measuring by one another is not wise. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a fitted thing land properly, and He does not need it to be defended by anybody.

And afterward, do not watch.

Do not track when hers is opened. Do not read the face. Do not run the two of them against each other on the drive home, which is where most of the damage in this actually happens.

You are free the moment you stop running the comparison afterward, and the Holy Spirit is the one who quiets a drive home. 2 Corinthians 10:12 calls that exercise unwise in every direction it is run, and the drive home has been worse than the afternoon for years.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has been losing a private contest for years.

You have been giving against somebody instead of to somebody, and a smaller gift has never once been a smaller love. 2 Corinthians 10:12 says they measuring themselves by themselves and comparing themselves among themselves are not wise, and the Holy Spirit is the one who called it unwise rather than wicked.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You are not in a contest with your sister, and no comparison anywhere has ever been able to measure what one woman means to the people she gives to. It is written that the measuring produces nothing wise, and the Spirit of God is turning six private years into one question asked with her out of the frame.

Take her out. That is the whole of it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Contest nobody else has ever entered, you are not deciding what I give my own nephew this year. 2 Corinthians 10:12 says comparing themselves among themselves they are not wise, so by the Holy Spirit I ask the question with my sister out of the frame, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Drop in my chest every year, you have never once been the measure of what I brought. The written word calls that measuring unwise rather than wicked, and by the Holy Spirit I give the fitted thing and I do not watch the room.
  3. Father, You never once put the fixed point in a sibling, and I have been measuring myself against mine for six years. Your word says measuring by one another is not wise, so by Your Spirit I put the ruler down, and I give to the person actually in front of me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
