They Have EverythingLuke 12:15

He Returns Them When I Am Not Looking

This message is for the daughter who has known for years that her father quietly sends things back and has never let on, and who now gives with the returning already built into the giving

You worked it out about six years ago.

Not from anything he said. From a small thing that was not where it had been, and then another, and then a pattern that took about two years to become certain.

He sends them back. Quietly, efficiently, with no fuss and no gap in the conversation, and he has never once mentioned it and neither have you.

And now something strange has happened to your giving.

You have started choosing with the returning already built in. You pick things that are easy to send back. You keep the whole thing small so that the sending back is not much of an errand for him. You have, without ever deciding to, begun collaborating with a policy you have never discussed.

And underneath that, a smaller and sharper thing: you have stopped putting anything of yourself into it, because why would you.

There is a sentence of Jesus about what a life is actually made of, and it explains your father better than anything else I know.

A man's life consisteth not

Here it is.

Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. (Luke 12:15, King James Version)

A man's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.

That is usually read as a warning to people who want more. It is that. But turn it over and it says something else too, and the something else is about your father.

If a life does not consist in the things a man owns, then the things a man owns are not the place to reach him, in either direction.

You have been aiming at the one part of him that the verse says is not the man, and Luke 12:15 puts a life somewhere other than in possessions. The Holy Spirit is the one who located it there, and He located it there for the person giving as well as the person receiving.

Now think about what returning things actually is, in a man like that.

It is almost never about you. It is a relationship with objects. Some men cannot hold an unnecessary thing in a house. Some have a horror of a thing sitting unused. Some cannot bear the sense of an obligation arriving in a box.

None of those are opinions about a daughter.

You have been reading a verdict in a habit that has nothing to do with you, and it is written that a man's life consisteth not in what he possesses. The Spirit of God is the one who separates a person from a policy, and the separating is the whole relief here.

And here is what has quietly happened over six years, which is the actual damage.

The returning was never the loss. The loss is that you stopped bringing yourself. You began giving to a policy instead of to a father, and the policy is a much smaller thing to love.

You are the one who went missing from this, and His word puts a life outside the abundance of things rather than inside them. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person where a relationship actually thinned, and it thinned on your side without a decision.

Say it once, lightly

So here is the first half of what to do, and it is smaller than it sounds.

Tell him you know. Once. Lightly. Not as a confrontation and not as a wound.

Dad, I know you send things back. It is completely fine. I have known for years.

You have a sentence available that ends six years of a thing nobody has said, and it is written that a life does not consist in the things a man possesses. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a light sentence land lightly, and light is the whole instruction here.

Let me say why saying it matters, because the instinct is to leave it alone.

An unnamed thing between two people costs something to maintain. Managing it, choosing around it, thinking about it every single year: that is work. That is a running expense, paid entirely by you.

And the naming of it, done gently, ends the expense without demanding anything from him at all.

You are able to put down something you have been carrying alone, and Scripture places a man's life outside what he keeps rather than inside it. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a sentence like that safe, and safe is entirely about how it is said rather than whether it is said.

And do not ask him why. That is the important part.

Do not request an explanation, do not invite him to defend it, do not attach a small hurt to the end of the sentence. You are handing him a fact and permission at the same time, and then moving on to something else.

You are giving him something in that sentence, and it is written that a life consists in something other than the abundance of things. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a sentence from turning into a conversation nobody wanted, and He does it by keeping it short.

Then give him something anyway

Now the second half, and it is the part that undoes the six years.

Give him something that has you in it, and let the returning be entirely his business.

Not something calculated to be unreturnable. That is another form of the same game, played from the other side, and he would feel it.

Something chosen the way you would have chosen it before you worked out the pattern. Something that carries one thing you know about him, and then handed over and let go of completely.

You are able to give without managing what happens next, and Luke 12:15 puts a life outside the fate of any object. The Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person open their hand all the way, and all the way is the difference.

And if it goes back, let it go back.

That is the freedom in this. Once the thing has been named and once the giving is yours again, the return stops being a message. It becomes what it always was, which is a man doing a thing with objects, in a life that does not consist of them.

You are released from the fate of what you handed over, and it is written that a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. The Spirit of God is the one who unhooks a daughter from an outcome, and He does it by moving the whole matter off the shelf and back between two people.

And one more thing, because it is worth saying to somebody in your position.

Some of what you give will stay. Not because you found the unreturnable thing, but because a man who has been told plainly that his daughter knows and does not mind sometimes keeps things he would otherwise have quietly dealt with.

That is not something to aim at. It is something that occasionally happens, and it is not the point, and the giving has to be free of it either way.

You are not giving in order to be kept, and the written word settles a life somewhere entirely outside the abundance of things. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a motive clean, and a clean motive here is what makes the whole thing bearable.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a daughter who has been giving to a policy.

You have been giving to a man behind a policy, and it was never going to be another object. Luke 12:15 says a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put a life somewhere other than on a shelf.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You were never being rejected by your own father, and no returned thing anywhere has ever been able to say what a man thinks of his daughter. It is written that the life is not in the abundance of things, and the Spirit of God is turning six years of choosing around a habit into one light sentence in a front room.

Say it once. Then give him something real.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Six years of choosing around a habit, you are not the shape my giving has to keep. Luke 12:15 says a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth, so by the Holy Spirit I say the sentence once and lightly and then I let it go, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Verdict I read into a thing that went back, you have never once been about me at all. The written word puts a man's life outside what he owns, and by the Holy Spirit I give my father something with me in it and I open my hand all the way.
  3. Father, You settled a life somewhere other than on a shelf, and I have been reading shelves for six years. Your word says a life consisteth not in the abundance of things, so by Your Spirit I stop collaborating with a policy, and I give to the man.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
