My Mother Says She Does Not Need Anything

She says it every year and she means it.

That is what makes it so hard. If she were being polite you could work around politeness. If she were being difficult you would know what to do with difficult.

She is not doing either. She has what she wants, she wants very little, and she has been telling you the plain truth for about a decade.

I do not need anything, love. Do not go spending on me.

And every year you hear it and something in you goes flat, because the sentence lands like a door.

If she does not need anything, and giving is what you do when somebody needs something, then there is no way in. That is the arithmetic your chest has been doing, quietly, every autumn, for ten years.

There is an invitation in Isaiah that takes need out of the equation entirely, and it is worth reading slowly.

Come, without money and without price

Here it is.

Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. (Isaiah 55:1, King James Version)

Read who is being called. Everyone who thirsts. And then, specifically, he that hath no money.

That is a person with a need and no means. The verse gathers them up first, and then it does something odd with the language and keeps going.

You have been reading a sentence about need as though it settled everything, and Isaiah 55:1 calls people in and then removes the transaction entirely. The Holy Spirit is the one who built that invitation in two movements, and the second movement is the one that matters here.

Now the phrase that breaks the logic on purpose.

Come, buy, without money and without price. That is not how buying works and it is not meant to be. The word buy is kept and the entire mechanism of buying is stripped out of it.

Which means the thing being described is not a transaction at all. It has the shape of one and none of the machinery.

You are being shown a giving that runs on nothing, and it is written that they come and buy without money and without price rather than that they qualify first. The Spirit of God is the one who wrote a paradox into that line, and He wrote it to end the accounting.

And here is what that does to your problem.

If need were the basis of the invitation, a person with nothing lacking would be excluded. But the passage never once makes need the entry requirement. It makes thirst the entry, and then it makes the whole thing free, and then it just keeps calling.

You have been standing outside a door that was never locked, and Scripture removes the price rather than checking whether anybody could meet it. The Holy Spirit is the one who set it up that way, and He set it up so nobody could be argued out of coming.

What that sentence actually is

Now let me say something about your mother's sentence, because one thing gets heard in it and there is another thing in it entirely.

I do not need anything is almost never a statement about giving. It is a statement about being a burden.

Women of her generation were taught, thoroughly and for decades, that the correct posture is to require nothing from their children. That sentence is her doing what she believes a good mother does.

You have been hearing a refusal where there is a discipline, and it is written that the invitation calls in the ones with no money rather than the ones with a claim. The Spirit of God is the one who translates a generation's habit, and this habit is one of the commonest there is.

And notice what she said and what she did not say.

She said she does not need anything. She did not say she does not want to be visited, or thought about, or known, or sat with, and she has never once said any of those.

You have been treating a sentence about objects as though it covered the whole territory.

You have far more room than that sentence gave away, and the written word keeps calling long after the money has been taken out of it. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a woman how narrow a refusal actually was, and this one is very narrow indeed.

And here is the thing to hold onto about her.

A woman who wants nothing is usually a woman who has stopped expecting to be pursued. Not that she does not want to be. That she stopped expecting it, which is a different and sadder thing, and it is the thing you can actually address.

You are able to pursue somebody who has stopped expecting it, and it is written that the calling goes out to everyone that thirsteth rather than to everyone who applies. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps calling a person who has quietly stopped waiting, and He has been doing it to your mother for years.

Come at her a different way

So here is what to do, and it starts by giving up the argument.

Do not try to prove she needs something. Do not go looking for a gap she has not admitted to. She will defend that position and she will win, because it happens to be true.

Come at her somewhere else entirely.

You are able to stop arguing about need, and Isaiah 55:1 abandons the transaction rather than negotiating it. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a person off a losing argument, and He does it by moving the whole conversation.

Then give her something that answers nothing.

Not something useful. Not something she was short of. Something that exists only because you know her, and that would be completely useless to anybody else on earth.

A thing connected to a place she mentioned. Something about a person she has not seen in years. Something from a decade she never talks about because nobody asks.

You have things about her that no need could ever have called for, and it is written that they come and buy without money and without price. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a mother's own history in a daughter, and He has kept a great deal of it in you.

And go and sit with her, which is the larger half of this.

An afternoon in that small living room with the photographs, with no errand and nothing to fix and nowhere to be afterward. Ask her about one of the photographs nobody asks about.

You are giving her the thing she stopped expecting, and His word calls people in and keeps calling rather than waiting to be needed. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes an afternoon with no purpose in it the most purposeful thing in a month.

And expect her to protest. She will.

She will say you should not have and you did not need to and she hopes you did not go to any trouble. Let her say all of it. It is a liturgy and it does not require an answer.

You are not obliged to argue with the protest, and it is written that the invitation goes out to everyone that thirsteth rather than to those who agree to come. The Spirit of God is the one who gets past a liturgy, and He gets past it by ignoring it warmly.
