Nobody did anything wrong.
That is what has made it so hard to put down. There was no slight. Nobody was rude. The thanks were warm and correct and lasted about the right length of time.
And then it was absorbed.
Not put aside. Not disliked. Absorbed, into a house where a great deal of that sort of thing already lives, and by the following spring you could not have found it if you had gone looking.
And you stretched for that. Considerably. You did something you would not normally do, and you did it deliberately, and you knew while you were doing it exactly what you were doing.
That is the part that has stayed. Not the vanishing. The fact that you knew.
There is a line in Ecclesiastes about what happens in a house where things accumulate, and it explains the vanishing without blaming anybody in it.
When goods increase
Here it is.
When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes? (Ecclesiastes 5:11, King James Version)
That is an observation rather than a complaint. He is not accusing anybody of greed and he is not moralizing about a full house.
He is describing a mechanism. Past a certain point, more arriving does not register as more. It joins a quantity, and a quantity has no edges, and a thing without edges cannot be noticed.
You have been reading a personal outcome where the passage describes a mechanism, and Ecclesiastes 5:11 observes what happens when goods increase rather than judging the people they increase around. The Holy Spirit is the one who framed it as an observation, and the framing takes the sting out of the spring.
Now the second half, and it is a quietly sad phrase.
Saving the beholding of them with their eyes. What is left to the owner of a great deal is looking at it. That is the good named, and it is named as the only one.
Which tells you something about the house rather than about the person in it, and it explains why the thing you stretched for could not land as a stretch.
You have been trying to make an impression in a room where impressions get absorbed, and it is written that what remains is the beholding rather than the receiving. The Spirit of God is the one who describes a full house honestly, and honestly here is neither flattering nor cruel.
And here is what did not happen, which matters.
It was not rejected. That is the story that has been forming since spring and it is not what occurred. There was no verdict. A quantity took in another item, which is what quantities do, and nobody in that house made any decision about you at all.
You were never turned down by anybody, and Scripture puts the absorbing in the nature of increase rather than in the will of the people. The Holy Spirit is the one who separates an outcome from a judgment, and there was never a judgment in this.
What you were actually proving
Now let me go at the harder half, and it is the reason the spring stayed with you.
A man in that doorway was proving something. That much has already been admitted privately, which is why none of this is news.
But the question worth sitting with is what, and to whom.
Not to them. If it had been to them you would have watched for a reaction and you did not, particularly. You handed it over and looked away.
You have been proving something to somebody who was not in that room, and it is written that the good of increase is the beholding rather than the being seen. The Spirit of God is the one who asks a man that question without making it an accusation, and it is a question rather than a charge.
And here is the answer most men in your position eventually arrive at.
It was to himself. A demonstration that the gap between that house and his does not signify, that he belongs at that table, that a man is not smaller for having less in a hallway.
And a demonstration like that is never accepted by the person it is aimed at, because the person it is aimed at is the one running the doubt.
You have been arguing with somebody who does not accept evidence, and the written word names the beholding as all that increase actually yields. The Holy Spirit is the one who ends an argument like that, and He ends it by settling the question somewhere else entirely.
And there is one more thing, said gently, because you have been rough with yourself about it.
Wanting to be equal to a room is not vanity. It is one of the more human things a man can want, and it usually comes from something that happened a long time before that house existed.
You are not in trouble for having wanted that, and it is written as an observation about goods rather than a rebuke to anybody who reached. The Spirit of God is the one who reads a motive back to its origin, and the origin is almost never the ugly thing a man assumes.
Give what the house cannot swallow
So here is what to do, and it is the opposite of a bigger stretch.
Give something that a quantity cannot absorb, which means give something that could only have come from you.
A thing built out of one specific piece of knowledge. A thing connected to a conversation nobody else was part of. A thing that has your own hands or your own history somewhere in it.
You have material that no house anywhere can take in as more of the same, and Ecclesiastes 5:11 puts the absorbing in the nature of increase rather than in the value of what arrives. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a specific thing unabsorbable, and specificity is the entire mechanism.
And make it small on purpose.
Small is what stops it being read as a stretch at all. A large thing in that house is a quantity. A small precise thing is an event, because it plainly did not come from anywhere except one person.
You are able to be unmistakable without being large, and it is written that what increase yields is the beholding rather than the noticing. The Spirit of God is the one who makes small and precise land where large and general disappears.
And prove nothing with it.
That is the discipline. Choose it, hand it over, and check nothing afterward. Do not look for it in the spring. Do not go back and see whether it survived.
You are free the moment you stop checking, and His word says what is left to the owner of much is the beholding with the eyes rather than any lasting good. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes the auditing out of a man's giving, and the auditing was the whole weight of last year.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man still standing in last spring.
You have something a full house cannot absorb, and it was never going to be another object. Ecclesiastes 5:11 says when goods increase, they are increased that eat them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who called that a mechanism rather than a verdict on anybody.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You were not rejected by a hallway, and no quantity anywhere has ever been able to make a decision about a man. It is written that what remains to the owners is the beholding, and the Spirit of God is turning a stretch nobody noticed into one small precise thing that went into an inside pocket.
Give what only you have. That is the whole of it.
Declare this over yourself
- Spring in that hallway, you are not a verdict that anybody in that house passed on me. Ecclesiastes 5:11 says when goods increase, they are increased that eat them, so by the Holy Spirit I give one small precise thing this week and I check for nothing, in the name of Jesus.
- Argument about whether I belong, you have never once accepted any evidence. The written word calls the absorbing a mechanism rather than a judgment, and by the Holy Spirit I stop proving and I start giving.
- Father, You watched me stretch to settle a question that was never being asked in that room. Your word says what is left to the owners is the beholding of them with their eyes, so by Your Spirit I give what only I have, and I never go looking for it again.
