You saw it the first time and you have seen it every time since.
A small hesitation. Half a second where something gets calculated, and then the warmth arrives, and the warmth is real enough but it comes second and you can tell.
He is working out what it is for.
And the thing is, he is not being unkind about it. A man in that position has people angling at him constantly and has learned to read for it, and the reading is mostly correct, and you happen to be one of the times it is not.
So you have adjusted. You give less now. You give the plain thing, the one that could not possibly mean anything, and you have started skipping years.
And you have noticed something you do not like about yourself in that, which is that you are letting his half second decide what you do.
There is a proverb about a name, and it changes what the whole exercise is for.
A good name is rather to be chosen
Here it is.
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. (Proverbs 22:1, King James Version)
A good name. Not a reputation. Those are different things and the difference is the whole of this.
A reputation is what a room currently believes. It moves fast, it is built out of impressions and half seconds, and it can be wrong for years at a time.
A name in that proverb is what a man actually is, accumulated, over a long stretch, in the ordinary business of living. It is slower and it is not managed by anybody.
You have been trying to defend a reputation when what you actually hold is a name, and Proverbs 22:1 sets a good name above great riches rather than above misunderstanding. The Holy Spirit is the one who chose the word name there, and the word carries time in it.
Now notice what a good name is not compared to.
It is not compared to being read correctly. It is not compared to being trusted quickly. It is set against great riches and against silver and gold, which are the things a man in his position already has plenty of.
You are being pointed at the one thing he cannot accumulate, and it is written that a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches. The Spirit of God is the one who put those two on the same scale, and He put the name on the heavier side.
And the second half is the one that speaks to your specific problem.
Loving favor rather than silver and gold. Favor there is warmth between people, the ordinary regard that builds up when somebody has been around a long time and has behaved consistently.
It is not something a person can be given in an afternoon. It is a thing that accrues.
You are building something that cannot be handed over in one moment, and Scripture prefers loving favor to silver and gold rather than to being understood immediately. The Holy Spirit is the one who works in a timescale like that, and He is not in a hurry about it.
You cannot control the reading
Now let me say the hard thing plainly, because it has been getting solved the wrong way for years and it is not solvable.
You cannot control how it is read. Not by choosing better. Not by being plainer. Not by giving less.
The half second is not about the object. It is a reflex that man built over years for good reasons, and it fires before he has any say in it, and it would fire if you handed him a stone.
You have been trying to solve something that is not in your hands, and it is written that the name is chosen rather than the reading of it. The Spirit of God is the one who tells a man which parts of a situation are actually his, and this part never was.
And here is the cost of the adjusting, which is the real damage.
Giving less has not stopped the half second. It has only made the thing smaller. A price has been paid and nothing came back for it, and the reflex is exactly where it was.
Worse, the man you are becoming in this is somebody who calibrates his own decency to somebody else's suspicion, and that is a bad trade at any price.
You are the one being changed here, and the written word puts a good name above everything that can be calculated in a half second. The Holy Spirit is the one who protects a man's character from another man's reflex, and He protects it by naming the trade out loud.
And there is one more thing, and it is the plain relief in all of it.
He does not have to read it correctly for it to be true. Whether the thing you hand him is an angle or not is settled entirely before it leaves your hands, and nothing that happens in his face changes it by one degree.
You have already settled what it is, and it is written that a good name is what is chosen rather than what is recognized. The Spirit of God is the one who witnesses what a thing actually was, and He is not waiting on anybody's reaction to decide.
Give the thing you had already thought of
So here is what to do, and it is a return rather than a new strategy.
Give the thing you had already thought of before the half second got a vote. The one you rejected as too much, or too personal, or too likely to be misread.
Not a larger thing. The right thing. The one that came to mind first, back when you were still thinking about him rather than about how it would be received.
You are able to go back to the first idea, and Proverbs 22:1 puts a good name above what any single moment can price. The Holy Spirit is the one who brings a rejected idea back up, and He brings it back because it was the right one.
And hand it over with no explanation attached to it whatsoever.
Do not say why. Do not say it is nothing. Do not make the small joke that pre empts the reading, which is what a man in your position always reaches for.
An explanation is an angle. That is the irony of it. The one thing that would genuinely make it a move is a sentence designed to manage how it lands.
You are safest saying nothing at all, and it is written that loving favor is preferred to silver and gold rather than to being understood. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a man's hands clean by keeping his mouth shut, and it works better than any wording.
And then, and this is the hardest instruction in this article, do it again next year.
And the year after. Without any change based on the half second. Not sulking, not escalating, not withdrawing, and not looking for evidence that it landed.
Because that is what actually settles it. Not a good gift. A pattern that runs for long enough that a reflex built over years has to account for it.
You have years available to you, and His word speaks of a name and a favor that accrue rather than of a moment that persuades. The Holy Spirit is the one who does that kind of slow work in another man, and He does it through people who kept going without being thanked properly.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man whose giving is read as a move every time.
You have a name that is being built by what you actually do, and it was never going to be another object. Proverbs 22:1 says a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put a name on the heavier side of that scale.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You are not what a half second decided you were, and no reflex anywhere has ever been able to make a clean thing into an angle. It is written that a good name is chosen rather than recognized, and the Spirit of God is turning six years of shrinking into the thing you had already thought of, handed over with nothing said.
Give the first idea. That is the whole of it.
Declare this over yourself
- Half second before the warmth arrives, you are not deciding what I give this man. Proverbs 22:1 says a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, so by the Holy Spirit I give the thing I thought of first and I say nothing about it, in the name of Jesus.
- Habit of shrinking so I cannot be misread, you have never once bought me anything. The written word prefers loving favor to silver and gold and says nothing about being understood, and by the Holy Spirit I stop calibrating my own decency to somebody else's reflex.
- Father, You settled what the thing was before it ever left my hands. Your word says a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, so by Your Spirit I give it clean and I keep giving it for years, and I stop watching his face.
